President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for greater investment in Maldivian youth, stressing their pivotal role in ensuring the country’s future stability and growth as it transitions towards an ageing population.
In a message marking World Population Day, the President reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for youth, citing priorities such as flexible work arrangements, affordable housing, accessible childcare, and equitable access to quality education and healthcare.
He also emphasised the need to equip young people to make informed life decisions, including through improved reproductive health services, counselling, and comprehensive healthcare support.
Underscoring the need for long-term planning, the President called for a comprehensive population policy that reflects national realities and prepares the country for the challenges ahead.
He echoed these sentiments on his X account, noting that with projections indicating one-fifth of the population will be over 65 by 2062, the Government remains focused on equipping youth to navigate the challenges of an ageing society.
World Population Day is observed annually on July 11 to raise awareness of population-related issues and the importance of sustainable development.
