The Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs, Mr Tõnis Saar, paid a courtesy call on His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The meeting took place in the absence of Minister of Justice and Digital Affairs of the Republic of Estonia.

During the meeting, the President outlined his Administration’s vision for a digitally empowered Maldives and highlighted the ongoing initiatives to prioritise digitalisation in public services.

President Dr Muizzu praised Estonia’s globally recognised leadership in digital transformation, noting its innovative approaches as a benchmark for transparency, efficiency, and accessibility in governance. He expressed interest in leveraging Estonia’s expertise to strengthen the Maldives’ e-governance and ICT infrastructure. Additionally, he emphasised the importance of advancing cybersecurity, digital literacy, and strengthening the digital capabilities of local governments to enhance public service delivery to a dispersed population, and align with the nation’s broader developmental goals.

Mr. Tõnis Saar shared Estonia’s experiences and challenges in implementing digital systems across various sectors and the transformative impacts on governance and daily life. He expressed eagerness to collaborate, offering Estonia’s expertise and support to help the Maldives achieve its digital transformation objectives.

Following the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs of the Republic of Estonia and the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology of the Republic of Maldives.
