Her Excellency Ms Yoko Alender, Minister of Climate of Estonia, paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Maldives, at the Joint Building of Ministries in Estonia today.
During the meeting, President Dr Muizzu highlighted the Maldives’ commitment to becoming an environmentally friendly nation. He emphasised the importance of adopting sustainable energy solutions to achieve this vision and acknowledged Estonia’s expertise in renewable energy. He noted that Estonia’s innovative approaches in renewable energy, smart grids, and sustainable technologies could significantly contribute to enhancing the Maldives’ environmental resilience while reducing carbon emissions and energy costs.
Minister Yoko Alender recognised the shared challenges faced by small nations like the Maldives and Estonia, particularly in combating climate change and achieving energy sustainability. She stressed the importance of strategic digital solutions that are both cost-effective and scalable. The Minister reaffirmed Estonia’s readiness to collaborate with the Maldives, emphasising that Small Island Developing States (SIDS) remain a priority in Estonia’s climate and sustainability initiatives.
Both leaders agreed on the need to strengthen cooperation in renewable energy, digital innovation, and environmental resilience. They expressed optimism about future collaboration and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing shared priorities.
Following the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to enhance knowledge exchange, cooperation, and support in the areas of climate change, environment, and energy.
The MoU was signed by His Excellency Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, and Her Excellency Ms Yoko Alender, Minister of Climate of Estonia.
