President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to initiate efforts within the year to address the space constraints at Kan’duhulhudhoo Island harbour. He made these remarks while addressing the residents of Kan’duhulhudhoo Island during his visit to several islands in Huvadhu Atoll on Wednesday.
The President stated that the space constraints at Kan’duhulhudhoo Island harbour would be addressed in accordance with the council’s plans, following consultations between the Government and the island council.
While speaking at the island’s school, the President assured the community that efforts would be made to expedite development, resolve space constraints, and resume halted projects at the school. He further promised infrastructure development projects for the school.
Emphasising the Government’s commitment to developing the education and health sectors, the President committed to resolving the challenges faced by the Kan’duhulhudhoo Health Centre. He added that the Health Centre would be developed to provide round-the-clock services, and practical efforts to fulfil other requests made by the Kan’duhulhudhoo Health Centre would also be initiated within the year.
The President also assured that discussions with the relevant authorities would be initiated to address the challenges faced by various regions of the Maldives, including Kan’duhulhudhoo, in transferring patients to Malé City via sea ambulances. These discussions will commence upon his return to Malé following the completion of his tour of the islands.
Emphasising the importance of sporting activities on the island, the President pledged to develop the futsal stadium, renew the turf on the football pitch, and ensure the pitch is suitable for athletics activities as well.
The President emphasised that the Government’s top priority for 2025 would be housing projects and highlighted specific housing issues on the island. He stated that additional housing units could only be constructed after land reclamation, making it unlikely for the project to commence within the year. However, he conveyed that the Government would earmark funds for the reclamation project in the 2026 budget, with the construction of row houses set to begin the following year upon completion of the reclamation efforts.
The President concluded his address by praying for the Almighty Allah to bless the Government’s efforts in meeting the needs and fulfilling the aspirations of the people.
