President Dr Mohamed Muizzu ratified the Occupational Safety and Health Act (Act No. 09/2023) today (January 02, 2024). The bill was passed by parliament on Monday, December 18, 2023, at the 37th sitting of its third session this year.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act is a law that establishes standards for employee health and safety as well as the safety and well-being of the working environment.

Under this bill, employers may face fines for unsafe workplaces, and employees can receive compensation for injuries sustained at work. Furthermore, the Act establishes several crucial elements to promote workplace safety and hold employers and employees accountable.

The Act also grants six months from its ratification to draw up guidelines and policies outlined in the law and to publish them in the Government Gazette.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act was published in the Government Gazette upon ratification and will go into effect in three months.
