President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the Government's decision to sponsor the Hajj pilgrimage for 50 individuals this year. He shared this announcement in a press conference held at the President’s Office, following today's Cabinet meeting.
The President underscored his Presidential pledge to sponsor Hajj for 1,000 people below the poverty line, within the next five years. The initial group of 50 individuals will embark on the Hajj pilgrimage this year, marking the commencement of this commitment. Presdient Dr Muizzu pointed out that the number of beneficiaries will vary each year, expressing hope for an increase in the years to come.
Moreover, the President outlined the selection process for the sponsored pilgrims, stating that the government will follow a predefined policy in selecting the list of beneficiaries from the national registry of individuals below the poverty line.
In addition, he assured transparency in the selection process by publishing the criteria and procedure in the Government gazette. President Dr Muizzu conveyed optimism for the Hajj sponsorship initiative to become a lasting commitment, continuing its impact beyond the span of his five-year term.
