President consults Judicial Services Commission on appointing two new judges to the Supreme Court

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Thursday, has forwarded the names of Dr. Azmiralda Zahir and Uza. Aisha Shujoon Mohamed to the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) regarding appointing them to the Supreme Court.

The President has done this under the powers vested in him under article 148 (a) of the Maldivian Constitution, authorizing the President to appoint judges to the Supreme Court after consulting the JSC and with the approval of the majority of the People's Majlis present and voting.

President Solih ratified the 3rd amendment to the Judicature Act (Act No. 22/2010), on 23rd July 2019, paving the way to increase the number of Judges residing on the Supreme Court bench from five, to seven.
