The President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Mr. Francesco Rocca paid a courtesy call on His Excellency, Vice President Faisal Naseem this morning at the President’s Office.

During the call, the Vice President extended deep appreciation for the generous humanitarian aid extended by the Movement over the years towards disaster response and risk management as well as community development. Highlighting the country-wide community-based training programmes led by the Movement, particularly in the area of first aid, Vice President Naseem noted the potential scope of expanding joint efforts in climate action, elderly care and youth empowerment.

The President of IFRC commended the Maldivian government’s initiative to reduce single-use plastic. Mr. Rocco noted that it manifests the government’s commitment and leadership to build an environment-friendly, resilient and self-sustaining nation, and urged the government to instil change around the globe through lived example. While speaking of the importance of continuous volunteer training, Mr. Rocco emphasised the considerable influence at the grassroots level to make a difference for the betterment of the society.

The call concluded with both sides conveying firm assurances of mutual support and assistance to elevate existing levels of cooperation in the coming months.
