The President today appointed two new High Commissioners, a Minister of State for Fisheries and Agriculture and an Envoy for Science and Technology. The ceremony to present their Letters of Appointment was held this morning at the President’s Office.
The two newly appointed High Commissioners are as follows;
- Dr Farahanaz Faisal as the Maldivian High Commissioner for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
- Mr Abdul Azeez Yoosuf as the Maldivian High Commissioner for India
The President also today appointed Dr Aminath Shafia as the Minister of State for Fisheries and Agriculture and Mr Ahmed Shafeeq Ibrahim Moosa as the Envoy for Science and Technology.
Addressing the two newly appointed High Commissioners, President Nasheed said the country’s foreign policy was undergoing some changes, with economic and commercial diplomacy as its main focus. Furthermore, he said seeking foreign investments was a top priority of the government and that foreign missions would need to work to attract foreign investments to the country.
The President also called on Minister of State for Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr Aminath Shafia to provide required locally grown agricultural products and reduce imports of food items.
Addressing the Envoy for Science and Technology, President Nasheed said the government aimed to make the Maldives world’s first carbon neutral country, within the next ten years. Speaking in this regard, the President called on the Envoy to help achieve this goal by gathering required information and conducting research, as well as through collaborating with foreign organisations and institutions.
