President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom stated that the Administration needs space to meet the expectations of the citizens. The President said this while at addressing the ceremony held to commemorate the successful relocation of Gaadhoo island residents to Fonadhoo island. He also said that we should be accepting of the various developmental projects being carried out in the country and that it was vital for us to facilitate opportunities to continue such projects.
The President applauded the people of Fonadhoo for accepting residents of Gaadhoo as their own and highlighted that, as Fonadhoo had ample space, people from nearby islands also have the opportunity of moving to Fonadhoo. He also stated that, with the successful relocation of Gaadhoo island residents to Fonadhoo island, more developmental projects and housing projects can now be commenced in Fonadhoo.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President expressed his belief that the people would be accepting of such projects when they saw their benefits. Speaking in this manner, the President pointed to the bridge being built between Hulhumale and Male’ which would alleviate challenges in travel between the two locations.
The President also stated that tourism was the main source of income for Maldives, and therefore it was crucial to develop this sector, by increasing the number of tourists visiting to Maldives — the expansion of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport would contribute greatly to tourism growth and create more job for the youth and help increase the GDP to $12,000 he said.
The President was accompanied at the ceremony by Minister of Environment and Energy; Hon. Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure; Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Minister of Islamic Affairs; Dr. Ahmed Ziyad, Minister of Tourism; Hon. Moosa Zameer and Vice President of PPM and Member of Parliament for Fonadhoo constituency; Mr. Abdul Raheem Abdullah.
