President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom said that he envisions a day when the Islamic University of Maldives is counted among the best in the region to provide Arabic and Islamic education. The President said this while speaking at the first convocation ceremony of the Islamic University of Maldives held at Dharubaaruge on Friday evening.
During the ceremony the President said that we should be proud of the accomplished graduates who are stepping into the society to serve the nation tonight — stating that it was a significant achievement for the government to have established the university.
While speaking at the ceremony the President said that university life would provide the opportunity to ensure the future and individual development of the students highlighting that the time spent studying in the university would encourage self development and expose the students to new experiences and knowledge.
The President also advised the graduates to strive to become individuals who play their part in taking responsibility in building the nation. He further stated that the purpose of such investments from the government was for education to nurture intellects to support the development, and progress of the nation.
The President also stated that his administration gives the highest priority to develop human resources; especially targeted at empowering women. President Yameen also highlighted the fact that most graduates from the Islamic University convocation were women, which underlines the important role they play in cultivating national progress.
During the ceremony President Yameen presented awards and special prizes to the top achievers from the courses. Apart from the President other senior officials handed over the diploma to the graduates including Minister of Education, Dr. Aishath Shiham, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to the Maldives His Excellency Bader Ali Al-Kahel, Chancellor of Islamic University Dr. Mohamed Zahir Hussain and Vice Chancellor of Islamic University Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali.
