President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has appealed to the larger international community to not inhibit the Maldives’ domestic policy. The President made his appeal while speaking at a ceremony held today, to inaugurate clean drinking water services in South Ari Atoll Maamigili.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President stated that by the end of this tenure, islands with population of more than 3,000 would, at the least, be provided with basic services. He stated that one goal of this administration was to provide clean water and sewerage system to at least 50 islands during this tenure. Another main goal of the administration was to provide peace and harmony to the citizens, the President said.
Pointing to the nation’s economy, the President stated that the aim of the administration was to increase national productivity so that the GDP would increase to $12,000. He noted that this would mean the Maldives would be then be counted among well developed countries. The President also stated that this could only be achieved after a transformational change, and that this transformational change would be brought about with investments. The President went on to highlight that foreign investment would also result in job opportunities for the youth.
In his speech, the President assured the nation that he would not impose influence over the judiciary and pointed to the fact that, under the separation of powers, the judiciary was an independent institution. He also stated that the people’s faith in the judiciary system would increase as the current batch of cases were soon resolved. The country would prosper when the rule of law is adhered to he said.
Commenting on land leased for resort developments, President Yameen said that, by the time the resorts are established, there should also be a well-developed airport that would cater to tourism requirements. It was the administration’s hope that, upon the redevelopment of the airport, around six million tourists would visit the country the President said.
President Yameen was accompanied at the ceremony by Minister of Environment and Energy, Hon. Thoriq Ibrahim, some members of the People’s Majlis and senior officials of the Government.
