President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom attended the project commencement ceremony of King Salman Mosque which is to be built in commemoration of the Maldives' Golden Jubilee of Independence. The ceremony was held at Hotel Jen on Wednesday evening.
During the ceremony, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that the project will become a historical monument and aid Maldivians, as believers, to further strengthen Islamic values and principles.
While addressing the audience, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ziyad highlighted the fact that, the Mosque would be the largest to be built in the capital thus far. He further stated that this indicated the importance given by this administration, and especially the President, to promote and preserve the Islamic faith.
The King Salman Mosque, a generous donation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, will be a six story structure. It is designed for 6,000 people to be able pray at any given time. The structure also consists of a library, a centre for Holy Quran, multi-purpose halls, classrooms and meeting rooms.
During the ceremony a certificate of donation was presented to the Maldivian government by the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to the Maldives, His Excellency Bader Ali Al-Kahel. The certificate was accepted on behalf of the Maldivian Government by the Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ziyad.
The President was accompanied at the ceremony by Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ziyad, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to the Maldives His Excellency Bader Ali Al-Kahel and senior government officials.
