Underscoring that his Government will not act beyond the boundaries of the constitution, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that his Government would therefore not hesitate to implement any criminal sentences issued by the court. The President made this remark while speaking at a rally held at the Alimas Carnival by the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), on Thursday night.
In his speech, President Yameen emphasised the priority accorded by his Government to build a more cohesive and considerate society that works towards the development of the nation.
Highlighting the efforts of the Government to bring infrastructural development to the atolls, the President underlined that the Government has now completed harbour construction projects in 7 islands, with 32 other projects currently ongoing. Similarly, the President stated that road development projects have been completed in 9 islands, whereas the funds to undertake road development in 8 other islands have been included in this year’s budget.
To address the water and sanitation challenges faced by the people, President Yameen noted that the Government was currently undertaking 17 projects to provide safe drinking water, and 10 projects to establish sewerage systems in the islands.
Highlighting his Government’s endeavors to empower youth, President Yameen stated that his administration would provide job opportunities to every youth seeking employment. Continuing in this regard, the President said the Government has facilitated 3031 job opportunities for the youth during the past year, from state owned companies.
Additionally, the President said that a myriad of new job opportunities have been created from both the fisheries and tourism sectors. He further announced that a total of 94,000 new jobs would be created for youth by the end of his five year term.
