Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has attended the annual prize giving ceremony of Laamu Atoll Education Centre.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the school in Laamu Fonadhoo last evening, the Vice President highlighted the achievements of the school since its establishment about thirty years ago.

Recalling his recent visit to New York to attend the United National Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Summit, the Vice President noted that among the 5 out of 6 MDGs the Maldives had achieved so far was the education related MDG. The Maldives has achieved the MDG of ensuring completion of primary education by every child.

At last evening’s ceremony, the Vice President also elaborated on the benefits of government’s policy to implement single session schooling and well-rounded, holistic approach to education. He said the objective of the policy was to ensure the students who leave school would be competent and productive citizens of the society.

Expressing concern over the increasing incidence of child and youth delinquencies, he urged parents, schools and the government to make a concerted effort to address the issue.

Vice President Dr Waheed arrived in Laamu Fonadhoo yesterday to attend the ceremony. He has returned to Male’ this afternoon after concluding the visit.
