President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has met with the elderly resident living in Male', at a meeting held last evening at Dharubaaruge.
Addressing the people who attended the gatherning, President Yameen stated that compassion, care and dignity given to the elderly was an important determinant of societal development. In this regard, the President said that the Maldives was not a pride-worthy level.
Underscoring the changing value system of the country, the President stated that educating youth, by instilling in them the traditional values inherited by our forefathers was the way forward to repairing the torn social fabric of the country.
In his speech, President Yameen underscored the Government endeavours to improve the quality of life, and to provide better public services for the elderly. Within this context, President noted that a huge proportion of the state budget was allocated to the development of the country’s health sector. Additionally, he stated that the Government scheme to provide priority public services to the elderly would be widened, to include the services provided by all Government institutions. The priority services provided to the elderly eliminates the need for queuing.
Speaking further, the President said that Hulhumale’ Second Phase Development project was being implemented not only to provide better living and housing facilities for the youth, but also for the elderly. Speaking in this line, President Yameen appealed to the elderly, living in smaller islands, to consider migrating to Hulhumale’ with their families to access better facilities
