Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has on Thursday ‎officially inaugurated the Legal Sector Reform Symposium organized by the ‎Ministry of Law and Gender.‎

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the Traders Hotel on ‎Saturday morning, Vice President Jameel stated that the justice system was ‎one of the main drivers of economic and social reform in the country. He also ‎stated that the new constitution enacted in 2008 was integral to the ‎establishment of an independent and democratic country, grounded on the ‎principles of Islam. ‎

Continuing in this regard, Vice President Jameel underscored the ‎importance of consolidating a strong judicial system which would safeguard ‎the basic rights of the Maldivian people. ‎

The Vice President also emphasized that additional reforms need to be ‎undertaken in order to ensure the full implementation of the 2008 ‎constitution. In enforcing these legal reforms, the Vice President noted the ‎importance of prioritizing human rights, and drawing from the lessons of ‎other modern democratic states. ‎

Speaking further, Vice President Jameel stated that in for the purpose ‎of safeguarding public security, which is one of the main pillars of a ‎democratic state, it was imperative to establish an equitable justice system. ‎Within this context, the Vice President stressed the significance of delivering ‎appropriate sentences to repeat offenders in order to deter them from ‎continued criminal behavior.‎

Concluding his speech, Vice President Jameel called on all members of ‎the legal community to work together in the interest of public security. ‎
