In a message sent on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has reiterated the Maldives’ support for the establishment of a Palestinian State.
In his message, the President emphasized that the Maldives fully supports Palestine’s efforts to establish statehood, and urged the rest of the world to enable the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination and establish an independent state of Palestine.
In this regard, President Yameen stated that:
“Acknowledgment and recognition alone are powerful gestures which can facilitate an international norm. The Maldives welcomes all efforts towards this goal, during the International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. We hope to see a future where Palestine emerges as a State with full recognition from the United Nations.”
Condemning Israel’s systematic violation of human rights, the President also stated that:
“The rights of the Palestinian people are embraced by the Maldives as a national foreign policy priority. As a responsible member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Maldives will continue to vociferously advocate the cause of Palestine, and our people stand united as one in support of the brotherly people of Palestine”.
