President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has met with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Tuesday evening, during his visit to Nepal to attend the 18th SAARC Summit.
At the meeting, the two Presidents highlighted the importance of enhancing the close friendly relations between Maldives and Sri Lanka, while also exploring avenues for further bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Emphasizing the significant role that SAARC continues to play in promoting regional cooperation, President Yameen stated that all member countries should focus on strengthening their trade and economic relations, in order to mutually realise their developmental aspirations. The President further expressed his views on making SAARC a more dynamic organization, which could play a greater role in representing the needs of small states, such as the Maldives, on the global stage.
Highlighting some of the key projects undertaken by the regional organisation, President Rajapaksa also commended President Yameen for his strong leadership as the incumbent Chairperson of SAARC.
