President of the People’s Republic China, H.E Xi Jinping and First Lady Madam Peng Liyuan, have concluded their State Visit to the Maldives. The Chinese President and First Lady were seen off at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport by President Abdulla Yameen and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim on Tuesday morning.
Meeting with the Chinese President on Monday, President Yameen highlighted the broadened relations between the two countries during President Xi’s tenure. The Maldivian President also thanked the Chinese Government for their continued support and assistance to the Maldives. Noting that the Maldives was a valued neighbour, President Xi stated his confidence that relations between China and Maldives would be further strengthened under the Maritime Silk Road initiative.
Following the meeting, Official Talks were held between Maldives and China. During the talks, President Yameen extended his gratitude to the Chinese Government for its support of the construction of the Male’- Hulhule’ bridge. The Chinese President Xi also highlighted that a common understanding and joint efforts have brought Sino-Maldives relations to the cusp of elevation to a higher plane.
Nine important agreements were signed between the Governments of Maldives and China during the visit, in order to foster greater cooperation on bilateral, health, and trade issues. Meeting the media afterwards, President Yameen and President Xi affirmed their intentions of forging a “future-oriented all-round friendly and cooperative partnership”.
President Yameen and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim hosted a State banquet in honour of the Chinese President and First Lady on Monday evening.
