Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has inaugurated the 2014 Carrom World Cup. The inauguration ceremony was held on Saturday evening at Sun Island Resort & Spa.

Speaking at the function, Vice President Jameel highlighted the significance of Carrom within Maldivian culture, with former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom serving as Patron-in-Chief of the Asian Carrom Confederation. Accordingly, the Vice President expressed his gratitude to the International Carrom Federation for granting the Maldives the privilege of hosting this year’s Carrom World Cup.

Noting the special priority afforded to the wellbeing of Maldivian youth, Vice President Jameel stated that, in addition to world class health and education services, the Government would strive towards the provision of modern sporting facilities in the country
.
The Vice President further stressed that international sports competitions, such as the Carrom World Cup, contribute to youth progress and national development. In this regard, Vice President Jameel emphasized that the Government is fully committed to working alongside the Carrom Association of Maldives, as well as other national sporting organizations, to expand the sporting sector in the country.
