Speaking at an event held at Dharubaaruge last night to mark the 35th anniversary of ‘Haveeru Daily’, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has reiterated the Government’s commitment to promoting a free press in the country and assured journalists that journalists will not be penalized by the Government for freely expressing their views within the parameters of the law. Highlighting the importance of the media in governance and reform, the Vice President recalled the pivotal and vibrant role of the media during recent nationwide elections in the country. The Government is firmly committed to championing the rights of all journalists”, he added. He went on to elaborate on the contributions by the local press during periods of violations of human rights and threats to domestic stability in the recent past. Furthermore, he commended the press for their responsible role in disseminating public information during the economic downturn
Vice President Jameel stressed the importance of factual and balanced reporting. He added that adherence to such editorial policies would enhance public trust in local news organisations. At last night’s function, Vice President Jameel acknowledged the contributions and achievements of ‘Haveeru Daily’.
At the function, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed presented commemorative awards to employees of ‘Haveeru Daily’ who had served for more than 15 years.
