The Former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi, has paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

At the meeting held this morning, President Yameen warmly welcomed the Former PM to the Maldives, and wished him a fruitful and enjoyable stay.

Highlighting the close ties that existed between the Maldives and Malaysia, the President thanked Former Prime Minister Badawi for the priority he accorded during his tenure towards expanding relations with the Maldives. Furthermore, President Yameen highlighted that thousands of Maldivians are today residing in Malaysia, and that many were attaining higher education in various institutions of higher learning in Kuala Lumpur.

Prime Minister Badawi welcomed President Yameen on his electoral victory and noted that the Maldives and Malaysia had enjoyed very close ties over the years. He added that bilateral ties had developed rapidly during the tenure of Former Maldives’ President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Former Prime Minister Badawi spoke on his current endeavors in education and noted that Maldivian youths were most welcome in Malaysia.

The President was joined at the call by Minister at the President’s Office, Hon. Mohamed Hussain Shareef, Foreign Secretary Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, and Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Aishath Azeema.

Former Malaysia Prime Minister Badawi was joined by Dr. Ahmed Anwar, Rector at Villa College.
