The new Chinese Ambassador accredited to the Maldives, Mr. Wang Fukang presented his letter of credence to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, this morning.

At the ceremony held at the President’s Office to present the credentials, President Yameen congratulated Ambassador Wang on the commencement of his term.

Meeting the new Ambassador after the ceremonial presentation of credentials, President Yameen expressed hope that the close bilateral relations that exist between the two countries would further enhance during the tenure of Ambassador Wang.

Highlighting that this year marks the 41st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and China, President Yameen underscored the high priority accorded by the Maldives to strengthening ties with China.

Noting that economic transformation was on top of his Government’s agenda, President Yameen expressed interest to learn from the Chinese experience, and to further expand cooperation between the two countries in the areas of trade and investments. President Yameen also expressed his gratitude for China’s continued assistance and support to the socioeconomic development of the Maldives.

Highlighting that bilateral ties between the two countries have moved forward steadily over the past years, Ambassador Wang said that Sino-Maldives relations have become a fine example of equality and a case of win-win cooperation between countries of different social systems, economic might and geographic sizes. Continuing in this regard, Ambassador Wang emphasized the progress made by the Maldives in political reforms and economic and social development. He further said that China respects the choice of political system and development path made by the Maldives.

Ambassador Wang reassured President Yameen of China’s continuous support and cooperation to the Maldives.

President Yameen was joined at the call by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Dunya Maumoon and Minister at the President’s Office, Hon. Mohamed Hussain Shareef.

Ambassador Wang was joined at the call by the Counsellor at Embassy of China in the Maldives, Mr. Liu Qiang.
