President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has urged all political leaders to give the Government; the opportunity to deliver the progress and developments aspired by the people. He made the statement in his address to the nation at the official function to mark the Unity Day. The function was held this morning at the Islamic Centre.
Speaking at the Ceremony, President stressed the need for cooperation from all parties for timely implementation of the manifesto. In this regard, he called on political parties to give approval for Cabinet Ministers and for the next year’s budget. He further appealed for greater cooperation towards the Government’s endeavor to combat crimes.
In his speech, President Yameen spoke on the importance of prioritizing national interest over political gains. He also stated that politicians must set aside the view that political competitiveness was equivalent to political antagonism.
He also recalled that 2004 tsunami was the most tragic and the biggest national calamity faced by the Maldives in its recent history.
Noting that the memories of the day remain fresh in the minds of many Maldivians, President said that on that tragic day many of us had lost our loved ones.
President Yameen highlighted the need to revive back the exemplary spirit of national unity and solidarity shown by the people of Maldives in the immediate aftermath of the tsunami. He said that each atoll and island displayed the fraternity, solidarity, love and compassion that epitomized the true principles of Islam, and of patriotism and national unity. He further noted the participation and involvement of youth in the recovery and reconstruction efforts.
In his speech President Yameen said his administration would give its utmost priority to steer the country towards development and to establish peace, national solidarity and harmony.
The President said that the Government’s aim was to bring infrastructure developments and boost national prosperity.
President Yameen announced that the Government’s goal was to provide housing to tsunami victims by 2014.
Continuing in this regard, President Yameen spoke on the importance accorded to improve Government efficiency and the quality of services to the people.
