SAARC Speakers of Parliament who are in the Maldives to attend the 7th Conference of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians, made a courtesy call on President Yameen Abdul Gayoom today. The meeting was held this evening at Bandos Island Resort.
Meeting just before the inauguration of the Conference, President Yameen and Speakers of Parliament discussed the importance of the Conference.
President Yameen said that having had the honour of serving as a Member of the People’s Majlis until he was elected as the President of Maldives, he felt a strong sense of kinship with the Speakers and Parliamentarians. He also noted that this Conference was the first international forum that the Maldives was hosting since the new Government assumed office.
Reiterating that the Maldives was committed to furthering regional cooperation, President Yameen stressed the importance of increasing the relevance of SAARC in the global politics and in international trade.
At the meeting, SAARC Speakers of Parliament spoke on the importance of frequent exchanges between parliamentarians from member countries. They also thanked the People’s Majlis and the Government of Maldives for hosting the conference in the Maldives and the hospitality provided.
