Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that the South African former President, Nelson Mandela, is an exemplary character who stood for human equality and human rights, and who fought courageously against apartheid.

He made these remarks in a statement delivered today, mourning the passing away of Nelson Mandela on Thursday.

The Vice President said that Nelson Mandela was a personality admired by Maldivians, and his work and services gave courage to many Maldivians.

“I believe that Nelson Mandela’s efforts were an important reason why ‘freedom,’ ‘human dignity,’ and ‘rights’ have become common words universally and why several countries adopted constitutions and laws that enshrined these concepts.

He set an example of the importance of upholding human equality, religious harmony and mutual respect for one another’s rights.”

The Vice President, in particular, highlighted Nelson Mandela’s quality of putting aside revenge.

“The death of such a human being, who earned everyone’s love and admiration, has brought profound sorrow to the whole world. All Maldivians view his death as an irrevocable loss to the entire humanity,” said the Vice President.
