The High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Maldives His Excellency Rear Admiral A.S.M.A Awal has made a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom today.
During the meeting, discussions were mainly focused on strengthening bilateral ties as well as enhancing regional cooperation.
Recalling that President Gayoom had established close ties with Bangladesh and other SAARC countries, President Yameen expressed eagerness to expand those relations.
On regional issues, President Yameen underscored the importance of regional countries supporting each other and working as a team on matters of mutual concern. He stressed that countries must be able to work in the international arena, while maintain the independence, sovereignty and cultural differences.
Recalling the professionalism and sincerity with which the former Foreign Minister of Bangladesh had chaired CMAG, President Yameen thanked Bangladesh for its close neighbourly confidence and principles of respecting sovereignty and self-determination in domestic affairs.
The Bangladeshi High Commissioner congratulated President Yameen on his election victory. The High Commissioner noted that the Government of Bangladesh looked forward to working closely with the Maldives’ new Government on matters of mutual concern such as climate change and human trafficking.
At the meeting, the President and the High Commissioner discussed long-term and short-term measures that could be taken to address the issue of human trafficking. The President said the Government committed to address the issue and would discuss with all stakeholders in finding an amicable solution.
