President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that those convicted of obstructing the performance of Police duty must not, under any circumstance, be pardoned or their sentence made lenient. The President made these remarks while speaking at the Police Memorial Day function held this morning.

In his speech, the President called for stricter punishment for those obstructing the performance of Police, and said that speedier investigation and judicial processes would prevent further crimes against the Police force.

Continuing in this regard, President Waheed appealed to the Prosecutor General to give special attention to, and speed up the processing stage of cases at the PG Office, of those who have assaulted Police officers in line of duty, damaged Police property, or prevented the performance of Police duty in any way.

In his speech, the President condemned in the strictest terms, the threats and assault on Police officers, and appealed to everyone to refrain from such actions.

The government has decided to mark the Police Memorial Day annually, as a day of remembering those officers of the Maldives Police Service who died in line of duty, and in recognition of their services to the nation. Four Police Officers have passed away in the line of duty during the past seven years.
