The governments of the Maldives and Thailand have held official talks, led by President Mohamed Waheed and Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra of Thailand, during the latter’s visit to the Maldives. The talks took place at Mulee-aage on Saturday afternoon.
The discussions were focused on further expanding and diversifying the relations between the two countries in areas such as fisheries, agriculture, construction sectors.
As a measure of further strengthening trade and economic relations, the President reiterated Maldives’ interest to ease travel to Thailand by signing a visa waiver agreement.
Prime Minister Shinawatra shared Thai government’s interest in expanding trade and other sectors. She discussed Thai government’s plan to increasing cooperation in the areas of agriculture, fishery, health and human resources development.
Before the official talks, the President and Prime Minister Shinawatra met separately and discussed bilateral relations.
Following the official talks, the governments of Thailand and Maldives signed seven agreements. The seven agreements are:
1. Comprehensive Framework Agreement on Cooperation between Maldives and Thailand
2. Mou On The Establishment Of Bilateral Consultations Between The Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Of The Kingdom Of Thailand And The Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Of The Republic Of Maldives
3. Transfer Of Prisoners Between Thailand And Maldives
4. Trade and Economic Cooperation Agreement between the Government of Maldives and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand
5. MoU between the Maldives National chamber of Commerce and the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking.
6. MoU between ADK Hospital and Thonburi Hospital.
7. MoU between Loxley Public Company Limited and AGT International and Ministry of Home Affairs of Maldives on Safe City.
