President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Dr Mohamed Waheed has commissioned new officers who completed the second officer candidate course conducted by the Officer Training Wing of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). The passing out parade of the officers who completed the officer candidate course was held at Girifushi Training Centre on Saturday.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President said the government’s aim was to strengthen diplomatic ties while empowering citizens to decide the affairs of the country. He said his government also gave high priority to establish a diplomatic policy that protects the interests of Maldives and other friendly nations.
President Waheed said safeguarding the country’s security was also important for the protection and promotion of the country’s economic benefits. Speaking in this regard, President said any talk of independence or sovereignty would be pointless if the country falls into economic slavery.
In his speech, President said it was not solely up to the MNDF and Police to uphold the rule of law and protect national security. Stating that they were the responsibilities of every citizen, President Waheed urged everyone to put forward national interests.
At this afternoon’s ceremony, the President presented the sword to the officers commissioned today. He also presented the special shields and prizes to the highest achievers of the officer candidate course.
