Stating that the government spends approximately 500,000 million Rufiyaa each year on fuel subsidies, President Waheed has urged to implement measures to reduce state expenditure on fuel. The President made this statement while speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Fahi ali programme, held this afternoon at the President’s Office.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Waheed underscored the importance of reducing the electricity consumption inorder to reduce the fuel expenditure. He highlighted that Fahi ali Programme was such an effort to reduce the costs of electricity.
President expressed appreciation to the government of China for the donation of 250,000, energy efficient LED lights. He remarked that the usage of these lights would reduce the government expenditure on electricity by 85 million Rufiyaa.
Highlighting that the Fahi ali programme was the first large-scale project of its kind in the Maldives, President said that government’s plan was to implement the programme across the country.
Continuing in this regard, President said that the government plans to install the lights received from Chinese assistance in all of the government buildings and harbours. He further said that LED lights would also be provided to the islands.
President spoke of the need to find alternative energy sources. In this regard he said that the solar power is the most viable option for the Maldives.
