The United Nation’s Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children Marta Santos Pais, has paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Waheed. The meeting was held this morning at the President’s Office.

At the meeting, President Waheed and the Special Representative discussed the social challenges faced in the country and ways to overcome these issues.

President Waheed briefed the Special Representative on government’s initiative to address issues related to children. In this regard he said that a special committee has now been established to reform and strengthen the government’s framework for promoting gender equality and for the protection and advancement of the rights of women, children, people with disabilities and senior citizens.

At the meeting, President Waheed reiterated his commitment to end all forms of violence against children and to promote and protect the rights of children.

Pais said that United Nations was pleased to know that “the person leading the country has knowledge and commitment about children”.

Pais assured President Waheed of United Nation’s continuous support and cooperation to the Maldives.
