President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that the country is of utmost importance and that political competitiveness and enmity should not hinder developmental growths of the country. The President made this remark while speaking to the people of Thulusdhoo, as part of his visit to the island today.

In his speech, President Waheed said that the developmental projects of Thulusdhoo were withheld by a political change.

“The decision of the islanders is their viewpoint. In a democracy, when the people decide what they want, government has to assist them. The developmental projects of the island should not be withheld because the people support a certain party or opinion. It is a great injustice.”

Noting that developmental projects of Thulusdhoo have been deliberately delayed, President Waheed urged to accord priority to the island, in this matter.

Underlining that the government receives a considerable amount of income each year, President Waheed remarked on the colossal spending of the government in the past, during the election period.

Speaking on this matter, the President stressed the dire fiscal state of the government, owing to the consistent deficit spending, which has in turn caused the government to accumulate huge debts.

Continuing on this regard, he underscored the measures undertaken by the government in the past one and a half years to reduce the budget deficit and public debt.

“We Maldivians are not indebted to anyone. We are proud people. We pay back what we borrow. We don’t have any outstanding payment, to any party”

President Waheed highlighted the exemplary cooperation of the People of Thulusdhoo towards the development of the island. In this regard, the President expressed his pleasure that the people of the island who belonged to different political parties and of different opinions could work together.
