President Nasheed has today met with senior officials of South Korean fisheries sector.

Senior South Korean government officials participated in the meeting include Director General of Distant Water Fisheries Bureau of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of South Korea Mr Lee Cheol Woo, and Chairman of Korean Overseas Fisheries Association Mr Kyung-Nam Chang. Also present in the meeting were the Director of Sajo Industries and the Executive Director of Dongwon Industries, two large companies operating in South Korean fisheries and business sector.

During the meeting, the President spoke on the challenges faced by the Maldives fishing industry. He said the government was working to expand the overseas market for Maldives fish products.

The President highlighted the importance of opening up the opportunities for foreign companies to buy fish directly from Maldivian fishermen for export. He said the government would welcome overseas companies that wish to buy fish direct from Maldivian fishermen.

Speaking at the meeting, members of Korean Fishing industry said they were encouraged by the meeting to further explore the opportunities available in the Maldivian fishing industry.
