President Mohamed Nasheed has today established Maldives Polytechnic. The institute will take over the vocational education programmes carried out by the Maldives Institute of Vocational Education and Training (MIVET), and certificate and diploma level courses run by the Faculty of Engineering Technology of the Maldives College of Higher Education.

Objective of establishing the Maldives Polytechnic is to facilitate the administration of the vocational and technical education programmes carried out by both MIVET and Faculty of Engineering Technology by a single institute. This will also reduce the expenditure on these programmes and enable efficient utilization of resources.

Following the establishment of the Maldives Polytechnic, the President has abolished the Maldives Institute of Vocational Education and Training. In addition, vocational training centers in Kaafu Thulusdhoo and Raa Alifushi run by the Faculty of Engineering Technology of the Maldives College of Higher Education have been transferred to Maldives Polytechnic.

The Maldives Polytechnic will operate under the Ministry of Education.
