President Mohamed Nasheed has sent a message of congratulation to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh of India. The President’s message reads as follows:

“As Your Excellency assumes office as the Prime Minister of the Republic of India for a second consecutive term, the government and the people of the Maldives join me in conveying our warm congratulations and sincere well wishes to you.
Your re-election as Prime Minister no doubt is a tribute to your wisdom and foresight, with which you have led India during the past five years. I am confident that you will be able to achieve far greater successes for India in the years ahead.
India and the Maldives have always shared the closest of relations and I look forward to closely working with Your Excellency on all matters of bilateral and multilateral interest for the mutual benefit of our peoples.
I also take this opportunity to send my best wishes for your good health and well-being, as well as for the continued progress and prosperity of the friendly people of India.”

President Nasheed had also earlier sent a message of congratulation to Prime Minister Singh following the massive victory the Congress-led alliance had achieved in the Indian general election.
Prime Minster Manmohan Singh was sworn in this evening.
