President Mohamed Nasheed has said that bringing about the economic changes proposed by the government would improve public welfare and allow for a sustainable economy. In his weekly radio address delivered this morning, the President revealed that 18 bills on the State’s Economy and Finance have already been sent to the Parliament.

President Nasheed also said that these proposed changes have been well-experienced in other countries, both larger and smaller countries, and that those changes have brought impeccable benefits to the people of those countries.

Speaking about the tax bills proposed by the government, the President stated that when taxation begins, the increase in the State’s income will help stabilize our economy, and that a number of government expenses will be perfectly worked out.

Noting that there are a number of reasons to bring about these changes to the Maldivian economy, the President said that Maldives is now a middle income country and should be working towards a well developed and sustainable economic state, preventing any sort of disruption.

In his weekly radio address, President Nasheed called for the parliament to give careful consideration to these bills, and to reflect on the benefits to be brought to the state, the people and the government.
