The Cabinet, at its today’s meeting, has decided to finalise the participation of Maldivian soldiers in the United Nations peacekeeping operations.

Discussing a paper presented by the Ministry of Defence and National Security, the Cabinet decided that the Ministry would make the necessary arrangements for the Maldives to sign the Memorandum of Understanding with UN concerning the deployment of Maldivian soldiers in UN conflict zones.

Deliberating on the matter, the Cabinet members highlighted the role of international agencies such as the UN, regional organisations such as European Union, and international treaty organisations like NATO in maintaining peace and security in a volatile world and conflict zones.

Therefore, they noted that it would be important for the Maldives to contribute to the efforts of these international agencies and institutions to ensure every country, every society and every individual had the opportunity to live in peace and security.

Further, the Cabinet members agreed that participating UN peacekeeping operations would enhance the country’s security capability through understanding of international security environment and integration in the international security architecture.

The Maldives’ participation in peacekeeping operations would also consolidate the country’s credibility at the international stage, members agreed.

In addition, at today’s meeting, the Cabinet decided to transfer the land, premises and other properties in the islands that do not belong to any other government ministry or agency to respective island councils.

The Cabinet today also decided to transfer the premises and properties registered to former atoll offices to atoll councils.

Furthermore, a decision was also made to reassign other properties and buildings, which are not registered to atoll offices, but are being used by government ministries or agencies to the particular ministry or agency.
