President Mohamed Nasheed has departed on a visit to Thinadhoo of Gaaf Dhaal Atoll this morning.

During the visit, the President will hold discussions with Thinadhoo Island Council on the ongoing government projects and proposed projects for the development of the island.

He will discuss the changes proposed by the Island Council to the construction of Thinadhoo harbour and seek Council’s consultation on ways to overcome obstacles to completing the project.

On the harbour project, the President will also discuss with the Council on setting up facilities in the harbour to develop Thinadhoo harbour to a fully fledged commercial and fishing harbour.

As part of the government’s programme to develop commercial harbours in the islands, service outlets for fishermen, local markets, and a ferry terminal as well as other business services will be set up at Thinadhoo harbour area.

Among the other development projects planned for Thinadhoo, the President will share the details of road construction project and sewerage system project with Thinadhoo Island Council.

Four kilometers of road will be constructed under the island’s road construction project. The government has decided to issue a sovereign guarantee to Upper South Utilities Company to assist them raise funds for the project, instead of the government borrowing to finance the project.

Funding required for sewerage system will also be raised by the Upper South Utilities Company under a sovereign guarantee.

Before visiting Thinadhoo, the President will visit Madaveli and Hoadehdhoo of Gaaf Dhaal Atoll and discuss with two island councils the development projects allocated for the two islands.
