President Mohamed Nasheed has said there were obstacles to find a permanence solution to the problem of mosquitoes through the current legal framework.

He said the government would seek a temporary regulatory solution to address the matter through the existing legal framework until a permanent solution was available.

Speaking at the ceremony held at Kalhuthukkala Koshi to mark the conclusion of ‘Madhiri Control 2011’ President Nasheed said that it was essential to make an expedite provisions to legally empower the Center for Disease Control, and that he would discuss the matter with the Attorney General.

‘Madhiri Control 2011’ was a operation carried out by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) to control mosquito in Male’ region following increase in number of people diagnosed with dengue fever.

In his speech, the President said that the problem of mosquitoes would persist if a permanent arrangement was not made for mosquito control. He noted the importance of curbing breakouts of diseases that are transmitted by mosquitoes, and thanked the MNDF for their assistance in mosquito control programs.

President Nasheed further said that the cooperation and assistance provided by MNDF to a many government projects greatly boosts these projects such efforts and increases the benefits to the government as well as to the public.

Today’s ceremony also marked the conclusion of ‘Effas 2011’, a programme carried out by MNDF to relocate people of Maavaidhoo, Kunburudhoo and Faridhoo in their new homes in Nolhivaranfaru.

He highlighted the project of relocating the populations Maavaidhoo, Kunburudhoo and Faridhoo to Nolhivaramfaru, and noted that MNDF completed this project with diligence within 11 days. He said that the work was completed to the satisfaction of many members of the public, and expressed his appreciation for MNDF on behalf of the people of Haa Dhaal Atoll and the Maldivian public.
