His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended warm greetings to Her Excellency Dame Cindy Kiro, GNZM, QSO, Governor-General of New Zealand, and His Excellency Christopher Luxon, Prime Minister of New Zealand, on the occasion of Waitangi Day.
In his letter to the Governor-General, the President reflected on the principles of partnership, respect, and unity embodied in the Treaty of Waitangi, which continues to shape New Zealand's national identity. He noted that the Maldives greatly values its close and friendly relations with New Zealand, highlighting both countries' shared commitment to cooperation and mutual understanding. The President also expressed his keenness to strengthen collaboration across areas of shared interest, both bilaterally and within multilateral fora.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, the President highlighted the strong friendship built over more than five decades of cooperation and goodwill. He conveyed sincere appreciation for New Zealand's continued support and partnership, expressing confidence that relations will continue to strengthen in a mutually beneficial manner.
President Dr Muizzu extended personal best wishes for the good health and wellbeing of both leaders, and for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the people of New Zealand.
On his official X account, he reiterated these sentiments, highlighting that Waitangi Day underscores the strength of embracing diversity for national unity and progress.
Waitangi Day is observed annually on 6 February to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, New Zealand's founding document.
