President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his commitment to build the bridge connecting Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo and Hithadhoo, announcing that a Chinese company has been appointed to develop the complete design following an international bidding process.

The President made these remarks during a meeting with residents of Addu Hulhudhoo and Addu Meedhoo – the first stops on the second day of his two-day tour of the country's two southernmost atolls, Fuvahmulah City and Addu.

In his address, the President assured residents that he would stand by his pledge, confirming that the aim is to commence construction within the next year. He explained that the Chinese firm has been contracted under a one-million-dollar agreement to develop detailed designs for three options provided by the Government, submitting complete drawings and technical specifications within six months.

The President described the company as one of the world's leading firms for such projects, noting that it has also been tasked with preparing feasibility studies for each of the three design options to the standard required for awarding the construction contract.

He confirmed that the design work commenced last month, with documents expected to be submitted to the Government around March or April next year. Once received, one design will be selected, an agreement finalised, and construction of the bridge set to begin.

The President also highlighted several major development projects currently underway, including progress in road development, solutions to waste management challenges, and the establishment of Fitness and Recreation centres. He noted that banking services are being established equally on both islands, with a new branch and a Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) ATM opening. These initiatives, he said, reflect his determination to bring essential services and development to the people of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo with equality. He emphasised that this is just the beginning, expressing his commitment to deliver many more such projects for both islands in the coming days.

During the meeting, passport services were inaugurated in Hulhudhoo, whilst ID card and passport services were launched in Meedhoo. Additionally, agreements were signed for the construction of extension buildings to upgrade the Addu Hulhudhoo and Addu Meedhoo Health Centres to hospital status, as well as for the construction of the new Seenu Atoll School building.
