President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed that the Government holds no preferred outcome for the upcoming referendum to be held this Saturday in Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, and Feydhoo of Addu City regarding the formation of separate councils.

Speaking at a meeting with residents of L. Fonadhoo during his ongoing visit to Hadhdhunmathi, the President stated that the referendum, scheduled for 25 October, is being conducted in accordance with the law to fulfil a campaign pledge made during the presidential election. The purpose of the referendum is to seek public opinion on whether to restructure the Addu City Council, following repeated requests from residents of the three islands.

Addressing misinformation surrounding the matter, the President clarified that if the people choose to form separate councils, each newly established council will be granted full authority, independence, and its own budget allocation.

He further noted that, based on current population figures and other relevant factors used to determine block grant distribution, the estimated annual allocations would be approximately MVR 25 million for Feydhoo Council, MVR 13–14 million for Hulhudhoo Council, and MVR 18 million for Meedhoo Council.

President Dr Muizzu assured that, regardless of the referendum’s outcome, the Administration will fully respect and implement the decision made by the people, to ensure the best outcomes for their communities.
