President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with the HDh. Kurin’bi Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and heads of local institutions today to discuss the island’s key development priorities. The meeting was held at the Kurin’bi School.

During the meeting, Council members underscored the urgent need to complete the island’s water supply and sanitation projects, initiate construction of the housing units announced under the local housing initiative and incorporate resident-requested modifications following the completion of the port. They also advocated for the development of dedicated recreational spaces, including a skating area and a designated zone for swimming.

The Council further highlighted the need to expedite the construction of the island’s largest football field and proposed the development of a turf futsal ground to enhance access to structured recreational facilities. The Council additionally proposed the establishment of a dedicated waste management centre within the city to ensure the safe and responsible disposal of solid waste.

During the meeting, institutional representatives highlighted the pressing need to address the shortage of classrooms at the school. They also raised concerns regarding logistical challenges in the timely delivery of vaccines to the island’s health centre.

The Council emphasised the critical need to enhance the island’s energy infrastructure by securing an additional power source. They also highlighted the urgency of addressing spatial constraints at the existing power plant and called on the relevant authorities to establish a dedicated Fenaka facility on the island. The Council reiterated its call for the provision of a new engine for the island.

During the meeting, President Dr Muizzu assured the Council that the Government would give due consideration to their concerns and work towards practical solutions. He also provided updates on ongoing development projects. The President was accompanied at the meeting by Cabinet Ministers and senior officials from State-Owned Enterprises.
