His Excellency Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has returned to Malé following an official visit to Spain to attend the ‘Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4)’ held in Seville.
During the visit, the Vice President participated in several high-level engagements, including the opening segment of the FfD4, where he delivered his plenary statement. He also delivered the keynote address at Multi-Stakeholder Round Table 6: ‘Reforming the International Financial Architecture and Addressing Systemic Issues’. In his remarks, he underscored the urgent need for global financial reform and called for inclusive representation of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the promotion of debt sustainability, and equitable credit ratings.
The Vice President also took part in Maldives-led side events, where he highlighted key Government initiatives aimed at fostering a resilient economy. These included the introduction of Coral Reef Insurance and the prioritisation of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), particularly those owned by youth and women.
Additionally, he participated in the side event “Debt Sustainability Support Service” alongside the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, His Excellency Gaston Browne. The Vice President reaffirmed the Maldives’ strong support for the SIDS Debt Sustainability Support Service.
He further attended official dinners hosted by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain, as well as the Prime Minister of Spain.
Senior Government officials from the Maldives also engaged in various high-level sessions throughout the conference. The FfD4 took place from June 30 to July 3, 2025.
