President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assigned the Ministry of Defence as the implementation authority for the Maldives National Service. The announcement was made in Directive 8/2025 from the President's Office, issued today.

Following the President’s decision, the duties related to the Maldives National Service have been added to the mandate of the Ministry starting from today.

In this regard, the duties of the Maldives National Service added to the list of duties of the Ministry of Defence are: formulation and implementation of rules relating to the Maldives National Service, planning and organising all matters relating to enrolment, registering those enrolled, and managing administrative matters relating to members of the Maldives National Service. Other duties include devising a mechanism for training of the Maldives National Service, its implementation, monitoring, and improvement of the mechanism along with stakeholder agencies.

In addition, a total of 10 duties were added to the list of responsibilities assigned to the Ministry of Defence.

The National Service programme is a special initiative launched by President Dr Muizzu. As an important policy initiative, the Government intends to build a skilled youth population who can contribute meaningfully to the nation.
