President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Dhivehi language is the key to preserving the identity of the Maldivian. He made the remarks in a post on "X", on the occasion of International Mother Language Day.
In his post, the President emphasised that everything, including the Maldives' identity and Maldivian flag, represents the country's autonomy and sovereignty, and is connected to the Dhivehi language. He underscored that the Dhivehi language is fundamental for the survival of the Maldivian people throughout history and into the future.
International Mother Language Day is observed annually on February 21. The day is celebrated to promote linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as the importance of language and its advancement.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of International Mother Language Day, and the theme for this year is “Silver Jubilee Celebration of International Mother Language Day". This year's theme honours a quarter-century of efforts to preserve linguistic diversity and promote the use of mother languages.
