President Mohamed Nasheed has proposed three important bills to the People’s Majlis. The three bills are:
- Amendment Bill to Chapter 4 of the Penal Code
- Press Freedom Bill
- Right to Freedom of Expression Bill

The Amendment Bill to Chapter 4 of the Penal Code was sent to the People’s Majlis by the government in recognising the importance of categorising defamation as a make defamation a civil offence instead of a criminal offence.

The Press Freedom Bill specifies the regulations and means to strengthen and promote press freedom in the Maldives. The Right to Freedom of Expression Bill was sent to the People’s Majlis with the aim to bring the freedom of expression in the Maldives to international standards and principles as well as to stipulate situations where the right cannot be applied.

In a letter to the Speaker of the Majlis Mr Abdulla Shahid, the President said that government wished to finalise these legislations.
