Beloved citizens of the Maldives;
I strongly condemn the targeted attack tonight against the Speaker of the Parliament, President Mohamed Nasheed. The attack has left President Nasheed with multiple injuries.
President Nasheed was immediately taken to ADK hospital following the attack, where he is currently under close medical supervision. I was last updated by his medical team that preparations for additional surgeries are underway to treat the injuries he sustained.
I pray to Almighty Allah to grant a speedy recovery for President Nasheed as well as others present on the scene who were wounded during tonight’s attack.
An investigation into the attack has been launched by the Maldives Police Service and the Maldives National Defense Force. At the same time, we are seeking international support to help carry out a thorough investigation. The Australian Federal Police has promptly arranged for a team of experts to travel to the Maldives this Saturday.
I have instructed all investigative bodies to expedite the investigation into the attack and bring to trial all those responsible at the earliest.
This is a blatant attack on the Maldives’ democracy and our economy. I give my full assurance to all beloved Maldivian citizens, that with the grace of Almighty Allah, we will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to ensure there is no place on our soil for such transgressions.
